Dal makhani or dal makhni is a popular dish from the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent. The primary ingredients are whole black lentil, red kidney beans, butter and cream.

This is one of the most popular dal recipe from punjabi cuisine. this dal makhani recipe is restaurant style and tastes awesome. if you love authentic punjabi food then you are going to love this dal makhani even more. Below is the step by step process of making dhal Makhni.


Dal Makhni



Whole black gram dhal                                ½ cup

(Karuppu ulundhu)

Onion                                                            2 big chopped

Tomato                                                           2 normal size chopped

Garlic                                                              4 pods

Ginger                                                            1”

Butter                                                             1 tablespoon

Cumin seeds                                                 1 spoon

Dhal makhni masala                                     1 spoon

Red chilli powder                                         ½ spoon

Salt                                                                as per taste

Fresh cream                                                  2 / 3 table spoon

Cilantro                                                          for garnish

Rajma                                                             2 tablespoon.



  1. Soak dhal with Rajma overnight, drain and cook for 7 to 10 whistle.
  2. Grind onion, tomato, ginger and garlic into fine paste.
  3. Heat a kadai, add butter, cumin seeds when it stops splitters add the grinded paste and sauté for 3 minutes and add dhal makhni masala, red chilli powder and salt, sauté till oil omits.
  4. Add the cooked dhal and little water, mix well and cook for 5 more minutes in low flame. Turn off the stove, sprinkle cliantro and add the fresh cream before serving.  Serve with plain rice, jeera rice, pulav or roti.



If we don’t have the dhal makhni masala, can add garam masala ½ spoon.

Can skip butter if we are diet conscious and use oil.

Make sure while adding fresh cream the gravy should be cool as sometimes it curdles.  Can skip fresh cream if we feel heavy.
