How to prepare Thirunelveli Yam erissery?                                         Recipe by   Anuradha Ramaswamy

Yam erissery is one of the popular side dish of Thirunelveli District.There are different types of erissery dish is there. Elephant Yam erissery is one of them.It is tasty.You can try it.


Yam(Karunai Kizhangu) 1 cup chopped

Toor dhal  (thuvaram paruppu) 1/4 cup

Coconut 5 tablespoon grated

Peppercorns  (milagu) 1 spoon

Rice flour 1 spoon

Mustard seeds 1/4 spoon

Asafoetida less than 1/4 spoon

Bengal gram dhal  (ulutham paruppu) 1/2 spoon

Curry leaves for garnish

Salt as per taste

Oil 2 spoon


Put Yam and dhal in a cooker and cook well.

Grind coconut, Peppercorns and rice flour together into a fine paste.

Take a kadai, pour oil and add mustard seeds, asafoetida, bengal gram dhal and curry leaves.

Now add the cooked Yam and grinded paste and allow to boil for few minutes.

Once we get the required consistency remove from heat and serve with rice.

Note :

Thirunelveli Yam erissery Can be served with roti also
